A Goodbye To Loons…For Now
November is here and that means both mom and Precious Kittie will be leaving the lake soon and heading, separately, to the Gulf of Maine. We wanted to have them give us a goodbye. Way back in June, the chick could fit comfortably on its mother’s back and she seemed a very long way from having a set of wings like mom’s. But, here we are 19 weeks later and Precious Kittie is at least as big as her mom (and a lot plumper thanks to her). She’s flying now and able to forage on her own. Still, they remain very close and the chick gets most of her food from mom (the one with the black beak and gray head in the photos below). We’ll say goodbye for now with two photos from a recent meeting that we will just call “a parting hug for all …” With hopes of seeing Precious Kittie’s parents next summer and that Precious Kittie will find a home a few years from now in our area, Jen and Jon thank you for letting us share the loons and other Pleasant Lake nature with you. Join us in wishing the plants and animals of Pleasant Lake a safe winter.
