All Things Pleasant on the Lake

“The more you know, the more you connect. The more you connect, the more you appreciate. And the more you appreciate, the more you have the capability of…love.”   Larry Aumiller

Mother Loon was observed on the nesting raft this past week and Father Loon was close at hand. Soon after, Mother laid two beautiful loon eggs. Mother and Father Loon take turns on the nest now, switching every three to four hours. This is their eleventh year together and they are a close team. Their major problem has been a nasty black fly season. Out on the water it has been very intense and there are times during the day that the loons have been driven off the nest by the vicious little beasts. The bugs swarm around their heads, crawl up their necks and bite around their eyes, bills and nostrils. Mother and Father endure it as long as they can in order to keep their eggs safe. The situation seems to be getting better and the amount of black flies seems less each day. We have hopes that this will be a successful nesting as the loons tend their eggs for the next 28 to 30 days. Turtle Cove seems hushed with the nesting of the loons. Precious painted turtles look on with curiosity. Ferns continue to unfold, sweet violets are in bloom and the air is filled with the perfume of lilacs. We will wait and watch. We will learn, we will connect, we will appreciate, and most definitely we will love.
Sending all the best, Kittie

(Photographs by Kittie Wilson. These photographs put us right up close to the loons, but please know that I am in the forest, behind a blind during nesting time. A long lens captures the close up scenes and the photographs are further cropped and enlarged for your viewing pleasure. I have great respect and love for Mother and Father Loon and I am very careful not to interfere with their behavior. Please always do the same.)
