All Things Pleasant on the Lake

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” John Muir

The scene on Monday shows mounds of snow along the waterfront. The same location looks quite different on Wednesday due to unusually warm temperatures. The warmth created layers of fog flowing over the lake in billowy ripples. The Scotties report many more smells in the forests, and scurry to sniff newly opened chipmunk holes. Feeders are checked almost every morning by Cooper’s Hawk, as he makes his deadly rounds. Blue Jays sound the alarm, and Cardinal is especially careful before he enjoys breakfast. Purple Finch visited this week, the first we have seen of him this winter. As we listen to the rhythm of Nature we find ourselves rejuvenated, and know without doubt that wildness is indeed a necessity.
Sending all the best, Kittie
