Pleasant Lake Flooding Report

Jamie Hess has reported these observations from kayaking around the lake this morning at daybreak.

1. Lake level appears to have risen at least 18 inches since Sunday’s storm. For the first time I’ve ever seen, water is gushing over the spillway next to the boat launch ramp. Thanks to the spillway, the lake level appears to have stabilized at last, but it could take days to recede. Tributary streams are still swollen with runoff, and the only sound on the lake this morning was the roar of countless waterfalls.

2. Dozens of docks are underwater. Those constructed of unsecured wooden decking panels (including ours) are coming apart. If as predicted the wind comes up and makes waves, those decking panels will all float away. Additionally, boats that have been tied up too tight to a dock are either listing to one side or lifting a portion of the dock up out of the water. Immediate action is recommended.

3. Three large floating objects came ashore on our point last night. I’ve located the owners of two of them. The third is a Hydro-Bike. If you’re missing a Hydro-Bike from your beach, get in touch; my contact info is below. Additionally, while kayaking I saw numerous canoes, kayaks and paddleboards parked right at the water’s edge; they could be swept away if the wind comes up. I recommend pulling them further up the bank.

4. The beaver dam in Great Brook appears to have been breached. A large mat of floating debris is headed out of Turtle Cove and into the lake. This floating mat, along with widespread smaller pieces of flotsam, could negatively impact waterskiing and motorboating in the weeks to come.

5. Again this year I found the remains of automotive flares which had been left on the lakeshore after the fireworks, to be flushed into the lake by Sunday night’s torrential downpour. Let’s invoke our ‘Good Neighbor’ policy and ask those responsible to clean up the remaining debris before the next rainstorm hits.
