All Things Pleasant on the Lake

“It’s that time of year when the world falls in love, Every song you hear seems to say…Merry Christmas, May your New Year dreams come true!”   The Christmas Waltz

It’s that time of year when it snows! We have had over a foot of fluffy, magical snow this week. All is calm, all is white. The lake is close to freezing. Our loons have flown, the mergansers have left, but large flocks of mallards remain, cruising about, coming ashore to feed on seeds fallen from bird feeders. Snow clings like cotton balls to spiny beech burs high in the trees. Father Cardinal tucks himself safely among snowy branches before venturing out to the feeder. A delightful flock of Juncos has joined us! What a treat to have their merry antics all about the yard. And we have Doves…so lovely and gentle. Red Squirrel appears more often, carefully holding each seed as he removes the hull. And look…there has been drama in the forest as Fox has paid a visit and shortly afterwards, along comes Coyote! Just look at the size difference! Coyote would certainly make a meal out of Fox if he catches up with him. But…”it’s that time of year when the world falls in love” , so hopefully all will be well…with Fox, Coyote and all our feathered and furry friends as we join hands and paws and wing tips and joyfully dance the Christmas Waltz!
